WINTER COURSES
Winter Skills Weekends
Winter Skills weekends are held in either Glencoe or the Southern Highlands, dependant on conditions. Both areas provide a realistic journey from the fleshpots of England, yet offer everything needed for clients to be able to assimilate the understanding and skills necessary for confident travel through the mountain areas of the UK under winter conditions.
It is stressed from the outset that this course is aimed at walkers wishing to develop skills or gain an understanding of travel through Scotland’s winter mountains. It is not a snow and ice climbing course, and will not deal with rope work other than as a means of keeping a party safe in extreme conditions.
Students will be given a grounding in movement with and without crampons and the use of an ice axe including step cutting and self arrest techniques. The weather, snow migration and avalanche awareness will be discussed, and a snow pit examined . Shelter construction will be demonstrated and snow holing explained, as will additional equipment for winter walking. Weather permitting, courses will involve adding a winter Munro to clients logbooks, and winter navigation strategies will feature prominently throughout the weekend.. The course will be useful CPD for Summer ML holders wishing to gain basic skills and experience to start them on the route to becoming a Winter ML.
Should adverse forecasts or conditions dictate that a course is not viable on a specific weekend, clients will be offered alternative dates rather than out and out cancellation. Refunds of course fees will not be made unless mutually agreeable dates cannot be found. Any postponement will be notified by Cadana Outdoors by phone call and email at the earliest practicable time.
